As you know, we decided to add another competition to the one in the last issue and have an interim draw for the "Be a Team Member for a Week" competition in order to take a lucky winner along to Jordan - don't worry, the Black Rock draw will still go ahead. Luckily for Oliver Cox, his was the membership card number drawn by club member Joseph Honeyands at an Open Day. Unluckily, for Oliver he isn't yet sixteen years of age, so for insurance reasons we were unable to take him along. As some compensation, Oliver and his father spent a day at Farnborough for one of the combined Gold Card Member/Press days and had a ride he'll always remember by being taken out by Andy Green for a blast in the 150mph supercharged Jaguar XJR firechase. He had a smile so big when he came back that it didn't wear off for hours. Just to add to his joy, he also went away with a bag full of Thrust goodies. Well done Oliver.
So now to the latest competition. We've had ones for those who know a bit about the LSR (or are at least able to look it up in books on the subject) and we've had competitions for those whose knowledge is restricted to just this project. But we also know that there are some real petrol heads out there who take a keen interest in all aspects of record breaking, so this competition is for you. Just to make it a bit more open, then here's a clue to help you on your way. The name of this car's driver keeps cropping up in speed record history and he hasn't finished yet!
The question is, who built and drove the rather fine looking car pictured below and which particular form of racing did he build it for?
In the event of a tie, the one telling us most about it will win the prize, which will be a genuine component of ThrustSSC that was actually used on the car during its high speed runs. These "spares" have attracted enormous interest at the auctions held on Mach 1 Club open days, and we have seen some very lively bidding! The value of the prize will be further enhanced by a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Richard Noble and all the ThrustSSC team members. Land Speed Record memorabilia is highly sought after, so we can expect the value of this prize to keep on increasing.
