Hello and welcome to Mach 1 News, the newsletter tracing the progress of ThrustSSC, the car being built by Richard Noble and the Thrust team with just one purpose - to give driver Andy Green the means to break the Sound Barrier and set the world's first supersonic Land Speed Record.
We are indebted to the healthcare organisation BUPA for providing this Newsletter. The connection between their business and record breaking might not immediately be obvious, but read on and you'll see why their role is vital.
If you've been with us since the project was launched in June 1994 you will know that the nucleus of the small team started with no money but with something infinitely more valuable - a wealth of experience, skills in a variety of areas, and the determination to see things through, whatever the situation. As Richard Noble himself frequently says, "no problems, just opportunities!" One of the key strengths of that original nucleus of team members has been their ability to recruit new people with specialised skills as and when they have been needed. Gradually the team grew in size, and as each person was added, so began the process of assimilating not only what they had to offer in terms of technical ability, but also what they had to offer in terms of support for each other in difficult times. Record breaking is never easy, and it follows that the bigger the goal you set yourselves, the more difficult it becomes. Teamwork is therefore not a nice-to-have, but an absolute imperative.
Sometimes people ask what happens if Andy Green is unwell at a critical time - will there be a reserve driver? The answer is no, in the same way that there aren't reserves for any of the other team members performing their own unique roles. This is where having a renowned healthcare organisation like BUPA behind us is a major benefit. Long hours and relentless pressure can take their toll, so all team members will be put through rigorous health checks and fitness programmes so that they are in good condition for the record breaking attempts.
It's all about teamwork and being ready to get the job done, and frankly we couldn't have a better organisation behind us than BUPA.
