Individual Status Reports
Car
- ThrustSSC has reached a highest speed through the measured mile to date of 728mph on Thursday 25th September 1997
- Subject to confirmation by the FIA, ThrustSSC set a new Unlimited World Land Speed Record of 714.144mph on Thursday 25th September 1997
- The car is on the desert being prepared for the next runs of the Black Rock Campaign
Team
- The ThrustSSC Team are settled into life in Gerlach and on the Black Rock Desert
- Long-stay Mach 1 Club members Matt, Duncan, Steve, David, Jim, Kate and Pete have had to return home having run
out of vacation time (thanks for all your help!)
Weather
- The weather is generally cool a light breeze. Occasional dust storms are being kicked up by higher winds.
Afternoon temperatures can reach the high 80s (Fahrenheit).

- Spirit of America has reached a peak speed to date of 675mph on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA,
during the October 1996 record attempt
- Spirit of America has reached a 1997 peak speed to date of 391mph on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA
- After experiencing imbalances with dust building up inside the front wheel-rims, the centre front wheel has been
removed as an attempted cure. Spirit of America is now a 4-wheeled car rather than 5.
- The team plan to run again on Wednesday
Mazola Excursion
Trackmaster Jack Franck is known for explaining everything by drawing in the dust on the desert. At last night's
team briefing Martyn moved onto the topic of track work - and everybody except Jack bent down and started drawing on
the ground. It took him a few seconds to work out what was going on...
