MIRA is delighted to have been able to offer help to Richard Noble during the development and assessment of the rear-wheel-steering system which is critical to viability of the twin-engine Thrust SSC.
John Wood, Managing Director of the Nuneaton-based world-class automotive research and technology centre, said; "Richard, throughout his world land speed record efforts, has been a superb ambassador for all that is good about Great Britain and its industry. We were extremely happy to be associated with the early stages of Thrust SSC."
Richard and his team carried out vital development work on the mile-long twin horizontal straights at MIRA's 700-acre (280 hectare) proving ground. The straights are so precisely laid that, like the Black Rock salt flats, they follow the curvature of the earth!
MIRA is no stranger to world land-speed attempts. Last year its aerodynamic wind tunnel team helped Project Volta - an attempt to win for Britain the speed record for electric-powered vehicles up to 500Kg - to success. Richard Noble was also an enthusiastic supporter of Project Volta which was undertaken by a team of students from Bexhill-on-Sea.
Everyone at MIRA joins in wishing Richard good luck and success in his bid to raise the world land speed record with Thrust SSC.
