As Thrust SSC can accelerate from 0 to 600 mph in 16 seconds, the forces generated on the car will be enormous.
Before skinning the car, strain gauges have been installed on the spaceframe chassis and on a front wheel suspension arm.
The strain gauges will serve two purposes.
During initial trials they will monitor stress levels at various critical points in the structure to confirm design calculations or to provide data for modifications.
In later testing and in the record attempt the gauges will be incorporated into the driver's safety feed-back system to shut down the engines automatically if any stresses exceed set limits.
Measurements Group UK Limited supplied the strain gauges and installed ten full bending bridges on the chassis plus two bridges on a suspension arm.
