XP plc, one of the UK'S leading power supply companies, is helping Richard Noble's attempt to set the world's first supersonic land speed record with a donation of power supplies to be used in various systems on ThrustSSC, the vehicle constructed for the record attempt.
Products from Computer Products, Cosel and Vicor are being driven by a 28V aircraft battery to provide power for a variety of on-board systems. These include a multiplexer for the main controller in the cockpit; emergency shutdown controls, deceleration chutes and braking; on-board camera video processing transmit and receive; and electrohydraulic suspension systems.
ThrustSSC, about to undergo speed trials in Jordan, is designed to break the sound barrier with a maximum speed of 850mph. The vehicle weighs 8 tonnes and produces a staggering ll0,OOOhp, using 4 gallons of fuel every second when running flat out.
