Sterling Hydraulics, the UK-based hydraulics manufacturer, has engineered the hydraulic system for the active suspension on the ThrustSSC - the car that plans to break the current land speed record and the sound barrier.
Sterling is sponsoring the British ThrustSSC landspeed record, and has developed and manufactured the hydraulic control system for the active suspension on the car which, according to Thrust's designers, is vital when the car goes through the sound barrier and on up to 850 miles per hour.
Sterling Hydraulics has built a reputation on wide ranging designs and manufacture of hydraulic screw-type cartridges and quick release couplings, to meet the toughest conditions faced in modern industry.
The company has supplied hydraulic components to a number of top Formula One racing cars, where product has been used on active suspension and gear selection systems. This has given Sterliug an enviable reputation, making the compaiiy the primary choice in motor sport.
The suspension unit is designed to be fully adjustable for softness and hardness, plus damping for both fiont and rear wheels. Levelling of the car through the rear wheels only is crucial and adjusts the attitude as it builds up speed. Correct downforce on the car due to air-speed is critical - too much downforce and the car could dig in, too little and the car could lift off.
In an emergency situation, the hydraulics are designed to put the car into a safe attitude to prevent lift off.
Now details of Sterling Hydraulics involvement in the project are available world-wide through specially created Thrust project pages on the electronic super highway - the Internet - http://thrustssc.digital.co.uk
Anyone with a PC, modem and appropriate software can access the Internet and the Thrust pages to learn more about how Sterling's products will help keep the 'car on the road.'
