When Thrust SSC is travelling at speeds of up to 850mph, any variation in the pitch of the car will be critical. If the nose lifts the car will flip over backwards destroying itself, and if the nose dips the down force on the front wheels will rise to several tons.
To control the pitch, strain gauges supplied by Measurements Group UK Limited, incorporating force transducers designed by the National Physical Laboratory, monitor the down force on the front suspension. Any variation is fed through a control circuit to the active suspension system on the rear wheels, also strain gauged which will raise or lower the tail of the car to correct the attitude.
Strain gauges are also installed on critical parts of the body structure and linked to a control circuit which will shut down the engines if stresses or forces are getting too high.
