Back in 1898 the pace of life was a little slower and the land speed record stood at a blistering 39.8mph!
Times have certainly changed. This year - with the help of Permabond’s high technology adhesives - Richard Noble and the Thrust SSC project will be attempting to break the current record of 633mph and go on to break the Sound Barrier at speeds up to 850mph!
To travel at this speed and still stay on the ground is a major engineering challenge. The "car" will be powered by two Rolls Royce jet engines capable of producing power equivalent to 140 Formula 1 cars!
But reaching such a speed is only part of the challenge. A car travelling faster than the speed of sound calls for state-of-the-art materials and joining technology.
Permabond’s involvement in this project included development of design specifications and stress analysis to provide the optimum adhesive solution.
From the securing of nuts onto bolts to prevent loosening by vibration, to the structural bonding of the engine framework, Permabond has ensured that no compromise need be made in the choice of design and materials used.
For example, Permabond’s ESP (single part epoxy resins) have been specified for bonding the "hoop" structure which forms the engine casing. The adhesive distributes the stress more evenly than traditional joining methods and also reduces the weight.
Materials such as titanium, carbon and glass fibre composites, aluminium and steel are all secured using Permabond’s adhesives. These newer engineering materials need the versatility and strength offered by adhesives, which would simply not be available with other securing systems.
Permabond’s range of adhesives can be used for many applications - not just land speed record attempts!
Permabond supply a range of adhesives and sealants to cover all industrial and engineering requirements:
