When Richard Noble's Thrust SSC car breaks the sound barrier for the first time, pilot Andy Green will depend on a Marilake Instruments machmeter to tell him the news. The Bournemouth, England based company is providing a suite of cockpit gauges, including the machmeter from an F4 Phantom fighter-bomber, for the British record attempt in the USA.
Other Marilake instruments in the car will include engine tachometer, temperature and pressure gauges and nozzle position indicators. Technicians have built a new engine start control panel for the vehicle which has been installed at Farnborough, along with the rest of the cockpit displays, in preparation for its trial runs.
Sales Director Philip Cubitt commented: "We have recalibrated the machmeter to extremely fine tolerances - and to show mph rather than knots - so we can be confident that Andy will get instant and accurate information up to the record and beyond. We have been working closely with the project throughout the summer and our Chief Inspector Robert Atkinson is seconded almost permanently to the team."
To supersonic car from supersonic aircraft. Marilake Instruments has recently installed a new passenger information screen on British Airways' Concorde fleet. The plasma display (replacing the original Marilake system), indicates aircraft height, speed, OAT and mach ratio.
