ThrustSSC Makes Final Low Speed Test Run - High Speed Runs On The 29th

Project Launches New Internet First

Internet Hits Climb Past 60,000/day

On roll-out yesterday, the ThrustSSC car developed an hydraulic leak and also problems developed with its second on-board computer used to retain run data. At first it was thought that the computer problem was due to the very high temperatures being developed in the computer bay (105F) as a consequence of late running during the early morning - this could have resulted in the need for a computer rebuild in the UK and a three day delay. In fact the problem was traced to a faulty switch. The hydraulic system problem related to air in the system - and the because the delays meant that the car could not complete its runs by 10.20am, the opportunity was taken also to change the hydraulic pump. The car was prepared ready for an immediate roll-out today, May 30th, for the 200 and 320mph run profiles.

The Thrust Internet following is growing at a rapid rate with 64,000 accesses on May 28th compared with 30,000 on May 27th. During May 29th record access rates were achieved of over 7,000/per hour which suggests a final total of in excess of 75,000 hits that day. The second Jordanian target of 700,000 hits a week is now within sight.

A new first is being launched today with the start of the Jafr Speed Competition. Here Internet followers are invited to guess the ThrustSSC next day's peak speed. Prizes of Lledo ThrustSSC models and samples of the Jafr Desert taken from the Pit Area are on offer. A interesting twist in the prize process is that winners who have been introduced to the project site by a third party are allowed to nominate the third party for a prize also. The prizes on offer are strictly limited in number. The competition is announced and launched today and full details are available on the ThrustSSC Web Site.

The Thrust Global Radio is now into its fourth report and already compliments on the quality and content are being received by email. Due to the lack of ThrustSSC runs yesterday, the reports cover the complexities and sheer hard grind of track preparation - otherwise known as fodding.

The project has been frustrated by an almost total communications failure caused by simultaneous faults on the satellite link and a major failure on the military land line between the Jafr base and the capital Amman. This leaves the only method of communication available as email. It is to be hoped that both systems will be operational again within 24 hours.
