Battle for Mach 1 On Land

The plans for running today were delayed once more by the weather which did not clear up as promised until lunchtime. This delayed both teams getting onto the desert, Craig Breedlove to make a further test run in his re-engined Spirit of America and ThrustSSC to carry out a compressor wash.

SoA made a single pass at approximately 13:45 running South to North reaching a reported peak speed of 381mph. They are happy their their new engine is now operational. Once the desert had been called safe, SSC was towed onto the desert for a compressor wash courtesy of the Gerlach fire brigade working in conjunction with the SSC team. Prior to that, Nick Dove and the engineering team had bled all the suspension hydraulics (and once again after the wash) while Mike Horne had modified the under car fairing to provide a further 2.5 inches of clearance. The modifications also included additional ventilation to the fairing as the car moves into the transonic region.

Jerry Bliss has reprogrammed the cycling routine of the active suspension for the 400-600 mph range and armed part of the abort system whilst also instigating self-levelling for rear loads. This gradual incursion into the transonic region and the way in which the shockwaves behave will be closely checked with the data from the 2 year research program and either prove or disprove the research.

Plans for tomorrow call for being on-site at 07:00 for the first of 2 runs at 08:00. The run profiles are as for today's postponed runs - Mach 0.82 and Mach 0..87. Spirit of America will run at 10:30 until 13:30 after which the Thrust team will practice turnaround routines while track preparation to replace washed out lines continues ready for the big push towards breaking the existing land speed record and then onwards to Mach 1.

Interest worldwide is growing at an enormous rate with the Thrust website taking 400k hits today and over 2million for the week. From now on, things get really interesting.
