September 10th was a far better day. With higher temperatures and windless conditions on Black Rock it was quite clear that higher speeds were doing to be possible. A huge effort on the part of the ThrustSSC track team had three 13 miles of lined track available. Whilst Spirit of America was undergoing an engine change in Rio Vista the remaining members of the SoA team were out to destone their course.
Very considerable media turned up with 6 TV crews and around 30 journalists. Both ITN and BBC were filming documentaries. Positioned at the mid point of the course they had excellent views of the 500mph run, opportunities to examine the wheel tracks and a press conference back at the Thrust Camp.
Run 41 was started at 0800 and achieved target of 280mph. Run 42 achieved 421 mph and Run 43 517mph. These were as performance plan and the driver Andy Green reported that the car was stable and that driving on the Black Rock surface presented few problems. There were minor serviceability problems with the car but serious serviceability problems with the two Palouste starters which had been recently overhauled but were becoming unreliable. Hopefully the situation will improve tomorrow - or this could become an attempt threatening problem.
SCCA timekeepers have started to arrive on site and Spirit of America is expected back on Friday. Tomorrow a further set of much faster runs are planned, starting at 0800am local time. Accredited media should arrive at Access 2 off Highway 34 by 0700am.
