BOC Gases

BOC GASES (the ‘old’ name, British Oxygen, was phased out 20 years ago) is part of The BOC Group, the worldwide gases, health care, vacuum technology and distribution services company which operates in 60 countries and had sales of £3.7 billion in 1995/96.

BOC Gases is a world leader in its field. In Europe, it is market leader in the UK and the Republic of Ireland and has operations in Benelux, Germany, Poland and Turkey. Europe-wide, it serves 350,000 customers and employs 4,800 people.

BOC Gases’ main products are oxygen, nitrogen and argon - plus rarer gases like krypton, xenon and neon. These are produced using cryogenic air separation technology. Air is the raw material, and electricity the power source. The company is also pioneering non-cryogenic methods of air separation, such as pressure swing adsorption, vacuum swing adsorption and membrane technology. Other BOC Gases products include acetylene, carbon dioxide (captured from other industrial processes and cleaned and packaged by the company), nitrous oxide, helium, refrigerants and a wide variety of speciality gases - in all, some 25,000 gases and mixtures.

It is BOC Gases’ intention to be the most customer focused gases company worldwide. Industrial customers range from huge steelworks and petrochemical plants to metal fabricators, food processors, glass manufacturers, water authorities and semiconductor manufacturers. At the other end of the scale are tens of thousands of small users who depend on BOC gases for welding and cutting. The company is the leading supplier of medical gases to the NHS, pharmacists, the emergency services and domiciliary patients. Other applications include the supply of helium balloon gas for promotional and fundraising events, and the provision of a complete cellar gas service to pubs, clubs and restaurants.

No matter where customers are located, BOC Gases is committed to providing them with world class products and technical support to meet their local, national and global needs.

BOC Gases are supplied to customers in a number of ways. Some of the largest round-the-clock users receive their gas by pipeline. Many other customers opt for a self-contained, on-site BOC gas generator. Many companies and hospitals have on-site liquid storage vessels, installed and maintained by BOC and replenished by road tanker. However the most popular option, especially for smaller users, is to have their gas delivered - or to collect it themselves - in high pressure cylinders.

In the UK the company has a strategically-placed network of production facilities and distribution centres, supported by 80 retail outlets called ‘Gas and Gear Centres’ and 300 local agents. The delivery fleet totals some 1,000 road tankers and cylinder delivery vehicles.

BOC Gases was the first gases company in the UK to achieve BS.EN.ISO 9002 registration across the full scope of its activities. It was also the first to achieve accreditation to the BS 7750 standard for environmental management. BOC Gases’ main European production or distribution centres are:
