Avery Berkel's Loadstar Gives ThrustSSC A Boost

West Midlands weighing equipment manufacturer Avery Berkel is backing the British attempt to break the World Land Speed record by loaning its latest advanced weighing systems to the ThrustSSC project team.

ThrustSSC is the British built supersonic jet-car, powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey jet engines that produce as much power as 141 Formula One racing cars.

'Determining the precise weight distribution at each of the vehicle's four corners is absolutely critical to ensure its optimum performance at the very high speeds involved.' explains ThrustSSC Chief Mechanical Designer Glynne Bowsher. 'The car has been weighed regularly during the project and Avery Berkel's load cells and Loadstar indicators have enabled us to obtain immediate and accurate weight measurements.'

Avery Berkel has been involved with ThrustSSC for two years, since the early construction stages of the project. The latest jet-car weighing equipment supplied comprises two new Dual Weight Display Loadstar indicators linked to two advanced load cell weighing systems. These special new Loadstar indicators are capable of taking weight inputs from two independent sources simultaneously, and their integral printers produce hard copy results of the critical readings.

Using the new Loadstars with independent active dual weight displays, the team can measure dynamically the exact weight distribution at each of the four wheels - all in just one fast, simple operation.

Previously, in the early days of the project, fore and aft weights plus the lateral weight distribution measurements had to be made in two separate operations.

Loadstar is an intelligent, multi-function digital weight indicator designed by Avery Berkel to provide every weighing function any industry could need. Connected to load cells or weighing platforms, this sophisticated instrumentation can be used in everyday industrial applications such as filling, batch weighing, parts counting, checkweighing and labelling. All these on-board functions are available immediately through the Loadstar keyboard.

The ThrustSSC project, which aims to retain the World Subsonic record for Britain and set the World's First Supersonic Land Speed record, is the brainchild of Richard Noble who is current holder of the Land Speed record that was set at 633.468 miles per hour in 1983.

ThrustSSC is 54 feet long (16.5 meters) and weighs eight tons (8.1 tonnes). Serving Squadron Leader Andy Green takes the driving seat in this supersonic car which is designed to reach a maximum speed of 850 miles per hour (1368 Km/h), travelling from 0-100 mph in only four seconds.
