It's now two years since the Mach 1 Club was launched alongside the ThrustSSC project, and in that time we've come a long way together. From small beginnings, the club has grown rapidly to a membership of around 4,000. Although a couple of companies have bought block memberships to give to customers or employees as gifts, the vast majority of members are individual enthusiasts who share our vision of being first through the Sound Barrier on land. Thousands of you have visited us, either at Fontwell or Farnborough, and I'm sure you will have noticed that Mach 1 Club members are impossible to categorise. Young, old, male, female, it doesn't matter - everybody seems to have got caught up in the enthusiasm for this project.
Keeping in touch is an undertaking in itself, and if you haven't done it yourself, then I'm sure you would be amazed at just how much work is involved in producing newsletters like this one, or organising club events. But all the hard work is worth it, because collectively you have provided about 10% of total project funding - you really have made a difference. For those who wanted to do more, we introduced Gold card membership and that accounts for around 300 of the total membership. Many of you have also lent a hand at Open Days or given your time at Farnborough to carry out all kinds of tasks ranging from sweeping up to wiring the Pit Trailer. This really indicates the strength in depth of this undertaking and shows what can be achieved against all odds and without a limitless bank balance.
The response to our move onto the Internet, where we offer electronic club membership, is yet another indication of the overall level of interest in this venture. To date, total accesses are pushing two and half million and show no sign of dropping off. If you really want to follow things on a daily basis, please do all you can to get Internet access.
This is the only realistic way that we can keep you regularly informed about progress as things get even more hectic. Our Internet address is http://thrustssc.digital.co.uk
In order to recognise the truly superb efforts put in by some Mach 1 Club members, weÕve decided to introduce an additional honorary category - Platinum Card Membership. You can't buy this membership, but you can be nominated for it by a team member and awarded it as a special honour by Richard Noble. Membership will come with a suitable award and those accepted will be added to our very own ThrustSSC Hall of Fame. More details of awards in the next issue. As the build project comes to an end and we move on to doing what the car was designed to do, we can't offer fame and fortune to those who've done that little bit extra, but we can say the biggest possible Thank You in our own way.
