Sterling Software Develop Web-based Database As Part Of ThrustSSC's Land Speed Attempt Website

May 29th 1997 - London, Sterling Software (formerly Texas Instruments Software), sponsor of the ThrustSSC (Super Sonic Car) team's planned attempt to smash the world land speed record by more than 100 mph, has developed a dynamic database page. The ThrustSSC Runs Database, on the team's Website, uses COOL:Gen (formerly Composer) technology from Sterling Software and allows on-line car enthusiasts to access up-to-date information.

The ThrustSSC Runs Database provides information on subjects including the car's latest run and best run to date; the record attempts are available to the screens within seconds of each run being completed. A library of high-quality photographs for journalists to access is also available on the ThrustSSC Website, which is sponsored by Digital.

In developing the Runs Database Sterling Software deployed, COOL:Gen, the industry leading component assembly environment that allows enterprise-scale client/server application development, and offers an extended capability to model-based development, enabling users to assemble desktop applications incorporating remote components delivered with COOL:Gen.

COOL:Gen is used to generate the databases and application components. The components are then published in COOL:Gen catalogue for reuse at the desktop. COOL:Gen enables the deployment of information systems that combine Internet-style architecture with core enterprise applications built using COOL:Gen.

On Thursday 22nd May, Jeremy Davey from Sterling Software accompanied the ThrustSSC team to the Al Jafr Desert, where he will maintain and regularly update the database throughout a three- to-five week period of high speed trials, during which time the car, driven by RAF Squadron Leader Andy Green, is expected to reach speeds in excess of 600 mph.

Following this, the team will go to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in August, where Andy Green and ThrustSSC will go head-to-head against veteran US land speed attempter Craig Breedlove in his car, the Spirit Of America. Richard Noble, the ThrustSSC Project Director and current world record holder, is very enthusiastic about this prospect, which he described as, "likely to be the greatest car race of all time. We have a chance to achieve a world first in a direct competition, the likes of which the world has never seen before."

Andy Green and Craig Breedlove are not the only challengers planning attempts on the land speed record this year. An Australian, Rosco McGlashan, will be making an attempt on Mach 1 in the early summer at Lake Gairdner in his machine, Aussie Invader 3. The most eagerly-awaited event, though, will surely be the race between the English pilot, whose more sedate hobbies include the Cresta Run, and the seasoned American daredevil.

One thing is certain: whatever happens, the most up-to-date information will be found at Thrust News: http://thrustssc.digital.co.uk.
