Discovery Goes Supersonic As Rover Group Sponsors Thrust SSC Land Speed Record Attempt

June 17th 1996

Rover Group is to provide major sponsorship for Richard Noble's Thrust SSC Supersonic Land Speed Record attempt, the company announced today, Monday, June 17.

The company will provide four Rover cars and a Land Rover Defender 110 as support vehicles to the project's Farnborough headquarters.

Five Land Rover Discoverys V8i's will provide back up during desert testing in Jordan this summer and will be airlifted to North America for the actual record attempt later this year, when Thrust SSC will run head to head with the USA's contender, Shell Formula Spirit of America, piloted by Craig Breedlove.

SUPERSONIC DISCOVERY...

In addition, to commemorate the record attempt, Land Rover will produce a strictly limited edition of just three 'Supersonic' Discovery V8i models, one of which will be auctioned to raise funds for the project.

Finished in the same, specially formulated, 'Supersonic' black as Thrust SSC, with red coachlines and the Thrust SSC insignia, the highly specified vehicle is fitted with alloy wheels, light guards front and rear, side runners, body side mouldings and a soft nudge bar incorporating Safari 5000 lamps.

The interior features Land Rover graphic seat fabric with part leather trim, a CD player, air conditioning, a fire extinguisher and twin sunroofs.

Speaking about the 'Supersonic' Discovery, Marketing Manager David Fulker said: "We are delighted to be supporting the Thrust SSC project. If you could walk into a dealership and buy a Discovery this highly specified it would cost around £36,000. We're hoping to raise at least that amount for the project when it goes under the hammer at Goodwood next week."

NB. The 'Supersonic' Discovery will be sold by blind auction to raise funds for the project. Click here for more information on the vehicle, and how to bid for it.
