Rivet Bonding

Riveting components together has a number of disadvantages:

Structural adhesives bring about many benefits, which can overcome these problems. They

Sometimes the performance offered by either adhesives or rivets is not sufficient individually, but together the performance can be outstanding. This is especially true when the two components are subjected to high peel stresses. Even the highest strength adhesives are not very resistant to large peel loads. But just one strategically placed rivet in addition to the adhesive, can produce dramatic increases in performance, as any peel forces are then eliminated.

The Thrust SSC vehicle has some parts which are bonded with PERMABOND structural adhesives alone, and others where the adhesive enhances the performance of the rivets.

The stresses involved in a supersonic car are naturally significant. Simply stiffening the vehicle up with thicker components would have meant that more weight would have been added. But by using a few rivets and bonding extensively the vehicle’s stiffness has been enhanced and its weight minimised.
