Making History With Motorola And Thrust SSC

To shatter the sound barrier on land is a daunting task in anyone’s language, requiring not only nerves of steel on the part of the supersonic drivers, but also exhaustive planning on the part of the entire team.

And the most vital element in planning any project on the scale of Thrust SSC is communications. Drivers, technicians, marshals and safety officers have to keep in touch for every split second of the world record breaking attempt.

Motorola will be supplying a state-of-the-art radio system that will play an integral part in Richard Noble’s history-making attempt on Nevada’s Black Rock Desert in September.

Making history is nothing new to Motorola. When Neil Armstrong took that "small step for man but giant leap for mankind" in 1969, he told the world using a Motorola radio system. In doing so, Motorola’s radios became the first to ever be used on another planet!

Motorola Radio Network Solutions Group (RNSG) will design, supply and install a dedicated radio system that will allow the Thrust SSC team to achieve:

So, every step of the way the car itself will be in simultaneous communication with the pit station, all the support team personnel, fire trucks, ambulances, "chase" car as well as the two truck and other essential back-up teams. And that’s not all. The car itself is equipped with more than 100 sensors which will be passing vital information to the project’s main computer database allowing the team to monitor the car’s systems throughout.

Breaking the sound barrier on land was something scientists once thought impossible - but not for much longer. Richard Noble and Thrust SSC, with the help of Motorola, will achieve what you never thought possible.

Motorola RNSG designs, manufactures and distributes analogue and digital two-way voice and data radio systems for a wide range of customers in Government, public safety and emergency services markets, as well as for service providers, utilities, industrial, mining, petroleum and transportation companies.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defence and space electronics and computers. Motorola semiconductors power communication devices, computers and millions of other products. Motorola's 1995 sales were $27 billion.
