Taxan CrystalVision 650

From the start of the ThrustSSC project, Taxan have provided the team with superb 17" monitors for use with their laptop and desktop computers at home and at base in Farnborough. To date Taxan have provided the team with over ten monitors - of which 5 are in use in the Pit Station Trailer. But the Pit Station Trailer in Jordan’s Jafr Desert posed a new requirement - while desk space was not a problem for the team in England, the room available in the operational PST was limited. In particular, the desk in the Communications Room which contains all the satellite and Internet equipment could not take two full-sized monitors and still leave adequate room to work.

This problem had concerned Internet Coordinator Jeremy Davey for some time, as two PCs are needed for the Internet operation. Then came the ThrustSSC Press Day and the attendant Sponsors’ Exhibition: Taxan’s stand was running a demonstration of their latest flat-panel monitor - the CrystalVision 650. Three examples were in use showing a video, and Jeremy was particularly struck by the sharpness and richness of colour in the image produced by the monitors, which were barely two inches deep.

Taxan had no hesitation in loaning the team one of the demonstration examples for use in Jordan. With a resolution of 1024x768 pixels and screen size similar to that of the team’s conventional 17" monitors, the CrystalVision 650 has amazed everyone with the quality of the display. The tiny footprint - easily a tenth of that of a conventional 17" monitor - has made all the difference in what is, by necessity, an area where space is at a premium.

Once again - thank-you, Taxan!
