Thrust SSC - Mach 1 Club

Club Talk 97 - 1

Here we are again!

The advance party of Mach1 Club members left for Jordan on Monday 12th May. Club organiser, John Lovatt, sends us this report:

Hi! It is very hot out here (115 degrees +), and flies everywhere! It is very difficult to work in these temperatures. Daily routine is up at 5am with a cold (or hot if we're lucky) shower. Track preparation is between 6:30 and 11am, then back to the houses on the air base to finish cleaning, have lunch and 10 minutes rest, before going out to the desert again for "fodding" and track preparation from 3:30 to 7pm.

Club members Ken Waughman and Bob Ibbetson have been staying in the Amra Palace hotel and camping on the desert - they must be mad, but are working tremendously hard!!

We have been treated very well by the USAF, who are here helping to reconstruct the air base's runway. The have provided us with substantial food reserves!

The desert tracks were not marked when we got here, but a lot of work has been carried out by everyone to get things moving. Andrew Noble will be arriving in the next few days - the locals regard him as a "saint". Mike Hearn has been sweet-talking the Jordanian soldiers into standing in straight lines on the desert for the purposes of line marking.

We are looking forward to the car and the team joining us on the 20th.

Best wishes,
John Lovatt.
