1330 hrs

With high winds continuing, running has been postponed until tomorrow. The weather forecast is good. ThrustSSC has the first slot, with roll-out planned for 0730hrs. Accredited members of the media wishing access to the Press Area opposite the measured mile should present themselves at Access 2 at 0700hrs.

1100 hrs

The two teams are currently waiting for the wind to die. The weather window predicted this morning was not as good as had been hoped and the ThrustSSC Team are stood down. The next decision point will be noon.

0630 hrs

Both ThrustSSC and Spirit of America are planning to run today, weather permitting. ThrustSSC has the first desert slot - roll out will be at 0830hrs. Accredited members of the media wishing access to the Press Area opposite the measured mile should present themselves at Access 2 at 0800hrs.

Car

  1. ThrustSSC has reached a highest speed through the measured mile to date of 728mph on Thursday 25th September 1997
  2. Subject to confirmation by the FIA, ThrustSSC set a new Unlimited World Land Speed Record of 714.144mph on Thursday 25th September 1997
  3. The car is on the desert being prepared for the next runs of the Black Rock Campaign

Team

  1. The ThrustSSC Team are settled into life in Gerlach and on the Black Rock Desert
  2. Martyn Davidson is returning home having used up all his annual leave. Adam Northcote-Wright is taking over as Operations Manager.

Weather

  1. The weather is generally cool a light breeze. Occasional dust storms are being kicked up by higher winds. Afternoon temperatures can reach the high 80s (Fahrenheit).
  2. Today has dawned cold and very windy with a clear sky. Nights are very cold now - winter is coming.

Mazola Excursion

During yesterday's dust storm Richard Noble was making his way onto the desert. He called in on the radio - he was lost. Various attempts to locate the Pit Station - including using the Aarooogaah! alarm as a fog-horn - failed. Search parties with GPS receivers failed. Eventually he spotted the Pit Station in a lull - then almost immediately got lost again. It was about an hour before he finally arrived - and for some reason no-one wanted to take him up on his offer of a lift back to Gerlach...
