ThrustSSC Project Status

The ThrustSSC Team are on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA, for the head-to-head race against the Spirit of America Team to set the first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record.

The very latest status of the car can normally be seen through the live pictures from our Microplex Web Cameras. The Web Cameras are currently offline and will be installed in the next 24 hours.

Individual Status Reports

Car

  1. ThrustSSC has reached a peak speed to date of 540mph on the Jafr Desert, Jordan in June 1997
  2. The car is on the desert being prepared for the first runs of the Black Rock Campaign

Team

  1. The ThrustSSC Team are settled into life in Gerlach and on the Black Rock Desert

Equipment

  1. Equipment is being readied for the first runs

Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA

  1. Permits to use the desert have been issued
  2. The desert is dry for some 15 miles and the 13-mile course is good
  3. Two tracks have been lined for 13 miles and fodded for 8.5 miles

  2. Accesses are currently running around 560,000 a week

    1. Spirit of America has reached a peak speed to date of 675mph on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA, during the October 1996 record attempt
    2. The first run of 1997 was made on Saturday 6th September, reaching a peak speed of approximately 230mph
    3. Further runs (unknown quantity) planned for today - desert 'slot' begins at 1000
