Thrust SSC

Project Status - Al Jafr, Jordan - 26th November 1996

Apologies for the lack of updates yesterday - Jeremy Davey (External Communications) took Robert Atkinson (Electronics) to Amman for a check-up on his injured hand!

Car

A further run on Thursday revealed modifications required to the steering for the high-speed desert environment. Parts from the UK have arrived and are being fitted.

Please check our Runs Database for the very latest information on the progress of ThrustSSC - the database is always updated as soon as possible after the car runs - and always before any report is written and published.

Desert

Although untouched by a severe overnight thunderstorm which brought heavy rain to the Al Jafr airbase and surrounding area, this morning the team found advancing flood-water approaching the access track and Desert Pits at a rate of a foot a second. The entire desert site has been evacuated as a precaution until the desert has absorbed the water.

A number of the white lines have faded in dust-storms and with the rain - these are being repainted with jir - a white lime mix as required.

'De-fodding’ - collecting all stones and other debris - is in progress. Tracks 3, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16 and 17 (of a total of seventeen) are completed.

Tracks 17, 16 (part) and 15 have been used so far.

Desert Pits

Due to the flooding, the Desert Pits is currently evacuated.

Weather

(1600hrs) Today started warm and dry after heavy rain from a severe thunderstorm on the airbase and surrounds (but not the desert) overnight. Flood water has moved onto the desert (see above). It is currently cloudy with distant heavy rain.
