Project Status - Al Jafr, Jordan - 6th November 1996

Car

A tie-down test in the King Feisal Al Jafr airbase’s test cell revealed a problem with the Non-Return Valves between the fuel tanks and pumps (in the event of one pump failing these prevent the working pump from simply transferring fuel from one tank to the other and bursting the second tank). New valves and flanges have been manufactured and brought over from the UK by a contingent of Mach 1 Club members.

The fuel system is being re-assembled today in preparation for pressure testing. The hydraulic system is also being filled and pressure tested.

The first runs of the car on Al Jafr desert are scheduled for Sunday 10th November.

Desert

The track has been marked out and prepared during the summer by Andrew Noble and the Royal Jordanian Air Force. The remaining task is to ‘de-fod’ the surface - collecting all stones and other debris. This has progressed quickly - tracks 14, 15, 16 and 17 (of a total of seventeen) are completed and tracks 3, 4, and 5 are in progress. The arrival of the Mach 1 Club members will speed up the completion of this task, among others.
